Paraesophageal Hernia

In 2012, I was diagnosed with a huge paraesophageal hernia. I was unable to eat a normal dinner. If I did, I would suffer severe abdominal pain and would actually have to lie down for hours until the food digested from my stomach, since my hernia actually closed off my esophagus, rendering me unable to expel gaseous products of digestion. Not to mention that when lying down, my full stomach ended up lying against my heart, giving me intense chest pains. The surgeon in my medical group did not want to attempt the surgery, and when I asked him if he had to do it, how he would proceed I was told he would end up making a very large incision and then try to figure out how to make the needed repair - a very dangerous sounding operation. I ended up making an appointment with Dr. Guilianotti, a very experienced and confident surgeon. Within 15 minutes of my first visit with him, he had an immediate plan of action on how to repair my hernia.

The surgery consisted of robotically meshing my diaphragm and esophagus.   The robotically performed surgery gave me only small incisions (1/2-3/4”), a much lesser chance of infection, and minimal recovery time. I was up and walking the next morning, and back to normal life shortly after surgery.  Since this surgery, Dr. Guilianotti has performed left and right side inguinal hernia repair on me. Both surgeries were performed robotically and with the same successful results of my paraesophageal hernia repair. I would recommend both robotic surgery and Dr. Guillanotti enthusiastically and without hesitation.

Dr. Giulianotti performed this remarkable surgery.
